Just hooked my new UFX up last night and
played around with it extensively. I've never had an RME device before,
so I no frame of reference for their devices to compare to a Fireface
or anything like that. I have, however, used a myriad of audio
interfaces before it.. none quite on the same pro-level of RME products,
but a Tascam FW-1884, Phonic Firefly 808, M-Audio interfaces, Presonus,
etc.
My synopsis:
I've never used an interface that has as low latency, has as stable
drivers free of cracks and pops when recording, or is as responsive when
starting and stopping playback of audio than the UFX. It is well worth the extra money, and it just feels like a professional product.
The computer I have it hooked up to is a 2 and a half year old Dell
17" Studio laptop running Win 7 x64 and Reaper, with a mid range Core 2
Duo, and 4 GB of RAM. That falls well within the specs of an average or
below average system these days. Absolutely no problems whatsoever with
USB, and the interface is fantastic to work with. I haven't hooked it
up via FireWire yet, though I don't even feel the need to try. I'm super
excited to track with it this weekend. Buy with confidence. Read original
We picked up a Fireface UFX
last week. All I can say is wow! It's crazy that we went to spend
$3600 on an Apogee Symphony, and the dealer actually recommended the UFX. Let me first say that the dealer knows his stuff...he is a trusted name in the industry.
When I went to him for new converters late last year, he recommended an
Aurora for our given budget. We decided to wait and came back last week
ready to purchase the Symphony when he suggested the UFX. Needless to say, I was beyond skeptical. After going back and forth for a couple of days, I decided to give it a try.
I am now a believer, and it saved me $1600. I'm not saying that it's
better than the Symphony. What I am saying is that I'm not concerned
with conversion anymore. With the UFX I
can now hear inside of a mix and not just in front of one. With the
TotalMix software routing concerns are the least of my worries.
Based on the converters in question, and I assume the budget to match...you owe it to yourself to at least give the UFX and test drive.

i have to say anyone that called the UFX harsh sounding did not evaluate the unit properly! If they heard harshness it was in the signal being reproduced! The unit is smooth and natural sounding with excellent detail and resolution! I have used AD16x, Lynx etc and the UFX can make the same quality record period! Read original

RME's sound = Clean, accurate, and musical.
Apogee sound = Slightly Colored Pleasing and musical. |
+1
well said, tribedescribe!
The RME UFX is a nifty piece of gear,
well worth the $$difference towards the FF800. Also the drivers are
quite outstanding, at least on Mac. That aspect comes into play, too,
not just the sonic quality.

Those particular factors you listed would be the least of my concerns.
I'd choose the RME Fireface over the
Apogee Ensemble simply on the reliability of the software drivers alone.
That's the biggest difference between the 2 pieces, in my opinion.
RME seems to have the best software programming team to keep their
Firewire & USB drivers up-to-date with operating systems with
minimal bugs. Everybody else lags in this respect (including Apogee, tc
electronic, MOTU, etc).
I say the above as an owner of Fireface 800, Fireface 400, and Apogee AD16X, Rosetta 800, Symphony. Read original
Well since the scope has broadened between the 2 original choices, I'll add my 2 cents. I have or do own RME ADI 2 fireface
800 and 400 and Apogee Mini me and Duet. For me Apogee always had the
edge in terms of the sonic spectrum and clarity of the signal. Someone
else might say if it sounds bigger coming out than it went in than that
piece is colored. I would contend that most pieces of audio processing
equipment have a sonic color! From subtle to heavy!
Now too 2011 and RME and Apogee. I currently am using a Apogee Duet and RME UFX! Here is how they stack to me! MIC Pres goes To the UFX
IN addition the EQ and Compression on totalmix can be used to track and
the Hi pass filter is one of the best digital versions I have heard.
You can really keep the fundemantal of a vocal while removing subsonic
signal. A/D conversion is very good on both with the Duet excelling at
producing an upfront signal that is very modern sounding while the RME
is more what goes in comes out! That is why I still have both(
units)because they do some thing a little different to the recording! I
love female vocals for Pop stuff to the Duet. Most other things I'm all UFX
now and very happy. I give both A/D a B+ ! D/A conversion is similar to
A/D comparison but different. IN this case there is a clear color
difference. The Duet has clearly pushed foward low mids to bass! It is
very musical and what Apogee is known for. I would say that stuff sounds
like a record sooner on the Duet. The UFX
is deeper and faster by comparison and plain! Also the Bass bump is
gone except a feeling of more of the very bottom octave. The UFX makes me work a lot harder to start to hear a record coming forth!
Boy this ended up longer than I expected but last features. Feature wise the UFX
slays the Duet or Ensemble for that matter. If they Add gain reduction
meters for the totalmix channel compressors I will give the UFX
an A for features. It is already recording using nothing more than the
one unit and being available to control most things with a Controller
Work surface! Also just to be clear I think the UFX is clearly better sounding than the Fireface 800. Both in conversion and Mic amps. The resolution of sound is finer and the unit is very quiet.
The Apogee Duet 2 will soon be out and it may even surpass the UFX Sound quality at this point. The thing is you don't need better than the UFX to make and amazing record! This is coming froma persomn that really didn't feel that way about RME gear before! Anyway RME UFX DUET 1 or 2 Ensamble 1 or 2 will get you there! Read original
Go to the RME web site and read the forum to get an idea of whats going
on with the UFX.
I dont know about the Orpheus, but I can tell you that I have loved my
UFX since the day it arrived and love it even more every day. I swear
its the best thing since sliced bread.
The Totalmix software lets you easily route anything to anything else,
The front USB recording is awesome, and it cane be done simultaneously
while recording to your software of choice.
The sound of it is clean, quiet and the mic pre's are near perfect.
It runs in standalone mode so even if your computer crashes it wont
affect the UFX's recording or other processes.
It understands Mackie control protocol so you can control it with
various fader controllers without the need of a computer.
RME has been steadily updating firmware and software and you can get
a prompt reply on the forums by RME.
I get recording latency of around 3 milliseconds on both firewire and USB.
The on board DSP reverb and compression is usable at least for headphone
mixes or such. I have better reverbs and plugs in software but the DSP
is perfectly usable.
My opinion? Love it. Read original
Just picked up a ufx a few days ago. I compared it to various other
converters i've had/do have (apogee, motu, NI) and it completely blows
them away. Amazingly clear and deep sound, total mix seems pretty
awesome so far as well.
Both the AD and DA really surprised me... I was unsure if i wanted to
wait it out for the new TB interfaces (whenever they will come) but
after hearing the ufx i have absolutely no buyers remorse whatsoever.
Great piece of kit. I'm excited to put more time in with it! :). Read original
just did a recording with the ufx going
via usb into my early 2011 macbook pro - 3.9% cpu usage at 64 samples
latency (Reaper 3.7). Seems rock solid, no glitches whatsoever. I'm
going to test this on a windows xp box (Gigabyte board, X58 chipset)
with usb and firewire later, but so far this has been the easiest
experience I've had with getting a new interface up and running
reliably. and noisefloor - practically non-existent! Read original
