THE BEST COMPANION
ANYBODY CAN ASK FOR.

Since more than a decade MADI-powered preamps by RME are the first choice for high quality recordings around the world. RME Micstasy and OctaMic mic preamps were used for countless high-profile classic orchestra recordings, winning numerous Awards worldwide, including several Grammies.

Finally, with the 12Mic and the AVB Tool the Next Generation Microphone Preamps with spectacular sound and reference specifications have arrived.

The AVB Tool is more than simply a four Mic Pre version of the 12Mic. The RME AVB Tool combines MADI and AVB/MILAN with four high-precision microphone, instrument and line level inputs, plus headphone and separate line level outputs and rapid user interaction in an ultra-compact package.

USB Port: Network connection & FirmWare Updates

When the device is connected with a USB 2.0 cable to a Apple macOS or Microsoft Windows computer, the 12Mic is automatically installed as a network device with an assigned IP number. The USB port cannot be used to stream audio signals.

Network Remote Control

RME AVB devices can be fully remote controlled via a web-interface on any network link (including USB and wirelessly over Wi-Fi), allowing for the rapid creation of gain groups, phantom power switching, and routing of signals to headphones for monitoring.

Routing Matrix

The integrated next-level routing matrix allows for quick routing of any analog inputs straight to the headphone output, as well as all digital signals and AVB streams.

AVB / MADI / MIC PRES

FULL MONITORING

The AVB Tool features a stereo headphone output on the front panel. It can also
function as a dual mono unbalanced output (13 dBu) and as a mono balanced line level output (19 dBu). Additionally two TRS balanced line level outputs are located on the rear panel (+4 dBu and +19 dBu).
Any AVB, MADI or analog input signal can be monitored.

Audio-over-IP. Next Generation.

AVB. MILAN-powered

The AVB Tool includes the new RME AVB Core implementing the IEEE standards for audio streaming, discovery and control meticulously.

Like all other RME AVB devices, the AVB Tool can be discovered and fully controlled by any AVB controller. Any signal reaching the device can be routed and streamed over deterministic networks with fixed latency and guaranteed bandwidth – no switch configuration required!

Different streams per device

In AM824 (legacy AVB) or high-performance AAF (MILAN compatible) format

Max. channels per stream

Each In and Out stream can be configured to contain 1-8, 12 or 16 audio channels in AAF or AM824 format

Total Audio channels

Across all streams (bidirectional)

The network ports support a link speed of 1 Gb/s for AVB are used to send and receive:

  • up to eight AVB audio streams when connected to AVB switches and endpoints,
  • remote status/control with AVDECC, and
  • remote status/control with HTTP over IP routed networks.

AVB Network Latency

All devices in an AVB network share the same time. This allows the sending device (talker) to specify the precise point of time when its audio samples should be played out at the receiver side (listener). This is achieved by adding an offset to the current time and sending the resulting timestamp with each sample transmitted. The timestamp is called “presentation time” and has nanosecond precision. For comparison, a single sample at 48 kHz has a duration of over 20800 ns.
The receiver compares the incoming presentation time of each sample to the current time and buffers the sample until the presentation time is has come.

128x 128 I/O Channels

MADI Optical + Coaxial

Despite its ultra-compact size, the AVB Tool provides a coaxial MADI I/O and a SFP port for an optional, second independent or redundant optical MADI port. Both ports can be used for daisy chaining, merging and converting MADI signals with lowest latencies.

The impressive I/O array delivers a combination of microphone inputs, analog monitoring outputs, MADI, and AVB signals – which can be freely routed between the formats.

Seamless redundancy is provided for the MADI I/O, whenever the secondary MADI port is mirrored with the same signal as the coaxial MADI input.

Single-mode or Multi-mode optical MADI

The SFP port can be optionally equipped with 125 MBit/s transceivers with LC connectors with multi-mode or single-mode cable support. The integration of an SFP port not only lowers the overall cost of the device, but allows an easy integration into any broadcast infrastructure with the possible switch to a single-mode module for transmission distances of up to 20 km. The MADI SFP modules can be purchased from Synthax USA.
