USB Port: Network connection & FirmWare Updates

When the device is connected with a USB 2.0 cable to a Apple macOS or Microsoft Windows computer, the 12Mic is automatically installed as a network device with an assigned IP number. The USB port cannot be used to stream audio signals.

Network Remote Control

RME AVB devices can be fully remote controlled via a web-interface on any network link (including USB and wirelessly over Wi-Fi), allowing for the rapid creation of gain groups, phantom power switching, and routing of signals to headphones for monitoring.

Routing Matrix

The integrated next-level routing matrix allows for quick routing of any analog inputs straight to the headphone output, as well as all digital signals and AVB streams.

One more thing

AVB Tool

Basically a 4 Mic Pre version of the 12Mic with the same incredible specs, the all-new AVB Tool adds multi-channel AVB & MADI features with full routing to any setup.

Additionally to the headphone output, the ultra-compact AVB Tool provides an additional analog stereo monitoring output. This way it can work not only as frontend for a Mic setup, but as AVB & MADI monitoring device for FOH or Tonmeister recording rooms.

The flexibly design with the cost efficient Audio-over-IP AVB/MILAN protocol allows the building of complete communication infrastructures, e. g. for court houses, transportation or company facilities. Shipping Now!

Simply Next Level.

The PAD-free microphone input stages provide 75 dB gain range and accept signals of up to +18 dBu.

All twelve front-facing XLR connections accept microphone and line level signals, whilst the first four connections also accept TRS connectors, with switchable high impedance (Hi-Z) for instruments.

The combination of RME´s new reference-class Mic Preamp design and Analog Conversion with SteadyClock FS simply capture all details in unmatched precision. A game changing Mic Preamp for the next decade.

Audio-over-IP. Next Generation.

AVB. MILAN-powered

The 12Mic includes the new RME AVB Core implementing the IEEE standards for audio streaming, discovery and control meticulously. Like all other AVB devices, the 12Mic can be discovered and fully controlled by any AVB controller. Any signal reaching the 12Mic can be routed and streamed over deterministic networks with fixed latency and guaranteed bandwidth – no switch configuration required!

Different streams per device

In AM824 (legacy AVB) or high-performance AAF (MILAN compatible) format

Max. channels per stream

Each In and Out stream can be configured to contain 1-8, 12 or 16 audio channels in AAF or AM824 format

Total Audio channels

Across all streams (bidirectional)

The network ports support a link speed of 1 Gb/s for AVB are used to send and receive:

  • up to eight AVB audio streams when connected to AVB switches and endpoints,
  • remote status/control with AVDECC, and
  • remote status/control with HTTP over IP routed networks.

AVB Network Latency

All devices in an AVB network share the same time. This allows the sending device (talker) to specify the precise point of time when its audio samples should be played out at the receiver side (listener). This is achieved by adding an offset to the current time and sending the resulting timestamp with each sample transmitted. The timestamp is called “presentation time” and has nanosecond precision. For comparison, a single sample at 48 kHz has a duration of over 20800 ns.
The receiver compares the incoming presentation time of each sample to the current time and buffers the sample until the presentation time is has come.

Maximum Flexibility

MADI & ADAT

The 12Mic provides a coaxial MADI I/O and a SFP port for an optional, second independent or redundant optical MADI port. Both ports can be used for daisy chaining, merging and converting MADI signals with lowest latencies.

In addition, three optical ADAT outputs for up to 24 outputs at single speed or 12 outputs at 96 kHz sampling rate offer compatibility to a wide range of audio equipment.

The impressive I/O array delivers a combination of microphone inputs, MADI, ADAT and AVB signals – which can be freely routed between the formats.

Single-mode or Multi-mode optical MADI

The SFP port can be optionally equipped with 125 MBit/s transceivers with LC connectors with multi-mode or single-mode cable support. The integration of an SFP port not only lowers the overall cost of the device, but allows an easy integration into any broadcast infrastructure with the possible switch to a single-mode module for transmission distances of up to 20 km. The MADI SFP modules can be purchased from Synthax USA.
